Photography for the luxury estate agency market is always a joy. After all you get to see many different styles and lifestyles.
And yet this is where the detail is so very important. Its not just the overall aesthetic but also being able to convey what it would be like to live there.
Everyone’s personal style and the way they choose to live their lives and showcase their lives through their homes is unique. No two homes and their contents are ever the same. And yet when you are selling a home you are told it should be neutral!
The details are often missed.
If there is already beautifully crafted built in cabinetry or a hand painted wall, then the buyer will want to know. It’s a myth that people who buy expensive properties routinely rip out every last trace of the previous owners.
And so when I’m photographing homes for the higher end of the property market its all about the details and the ambience.
When you’re lighting a room for a photograph you have to be mindful of not creating an environment that doesn’t exist. For example if a room is naturally dark because of a lack of light then the focus on the softness of the lower light is key.
And by contrast, if a space is drenched in natural light then you can show this off by using a little extra pop of light to make it as the human eye would see.
When I photographed this Cotswolds property the weather was not on our side. It was a miserable damp day. The key selling point of this property is the view from all floors. And whilst the views were just about visible, they certainly weren’t at their best.
And that’s when a little bit of camera trickery and post production work comes into play!
I can totally imagine a lazy afternoon in one of these chairs with a good book!
